Rob, what do you mean by 'better'? Generally yes, But I would definitely say the D70 is better! I bought one for my daughter instead of a D100....

Does anyone else agree that the D80 is better?

A classi cone, maybe Nikon's last great DSLR before they got all fancy. I had to re-register, just to say there used to 800,000+ images last time I was here, What happened?

My first digital camera was a D100, bought in September 2003. It served me well for three years, then over a period of about two months the exposure controls became slightly unreliable. In October 2006 it "died": it set exposures according to whatever mood it was in; manual mode became completely unusable. (I explain the experience here:http://www.pbase.com/listorama/image/68120954 .) The D100 was replaced by a D80, whose features and ease of operation are much better than those of the D100. This can be an expensive hobby.

Still use this camera, see lots of these in nature reserves, and it should see me through another couple of year.

After some time, and having my new D-200 I have to say that the D-100 is a great camera, a bit too slow, but unless you don't have to make high speed photography it is perfectly fine, Since the last posting I don't know how many photos more I have made, but quite a few and it still works perfectly well if we exclude a bit of a contact problem with the WB knob it has fullfilled all the expetatives I had of this camera and more, and though now I mainly have it retired I still keep it as a second camera or as a backup one for what ever may happen with the D200.
I also agree with what Alfred Arzt sais quite a bit, I even and say that I did an exhibition of photos that were 100x80 and it standed quite well the quality though I shot it in JPG "high"... anyway I recognize that transforming it in BW as I did also helped to keep the pixels in an apparent small size.
Well, for me the D100 was the welcome to a new photographic era, the digital one, and it has been a good school and a good camera during all these years that I have had it.

Love my D100 and F100. Everything I need!!!

For me it was a very good camera. I had it 3 years till i got my d200 one moth ago. Had a lot of published pictures with it, for exapmle lot of page 3 girl pictures in Austrian Newspapers:http://www.pbase.com/artalf/black__white.
Made also very good big prints: size 50x75cm out of d100 raw files, they are briliant. High iso is good enogh up 1250 iso. 1600 iso is a bit noisy, more than in most modern DSLRS of today, but 800 iso is very good. lots of d100 pix in:http://www.pbase.com/artalf

Still in use and very good results. Bettered only by costly SLRs.

Had mine since it was first released and it's still running strong. Was a great investment.

It's the first I hear about the CCD overheating? Is Xabier talking about continuous use? From what I've read, Canon and Olympus have bigger problems with auto-focus (AF) than Nikon. The D-100 is a great camera. For professionals it is without a doubt better than the light-weight, consumer-oriented, marketed-into-popularity D70.

About AF: Many photographers would be better at focusing manually than even the latest AF technology standards.

The biggest gripes I have with AF (digital) SLR's is that, (1)the manufacturers seem to refuse to produce compatible manual focus lenses for the auto-focus cameras, and that, (2)there is no AF or MF standard prime lens (mass-produced and light 33mm f1.4 in Nikon) for the smaller digital sensors.

Well, I can say several good and bad things about it.
The good ones are:
It is quite a bit stronger then it looks like at first hand. I bought one of the first ones that arrived here in Spain, and by now I probably have done arround 300.000 shots without a problem. (some collegues have had problems with the shooter).
It has many features in the menu and it is complete PRO. camera and it's resolution is not bad, aldo it is recomendable to shoot with High JPG, RAW or TIFF for maximum performance.
Bad Things:
Nikon still didn't solve the AF precission problems that they have ben having since the F-90X, at least this is my feeleng. The CCD is not as stable as one wold like, in a serial shot of photos not all photos come out exposed as you wold wish, not even in manual. In large exposures, the CCD heats up and makes an image that has noise (specles).
It doesen't con vince me it's saturation an contrast, I don't think that it is convinient to do a print without touching the photo with the photoshop, and aldo it has a good latitud on low lights, the high lights do... it looses detail very easely. In this aspect I think that you can compare any photo with a 800 ASA slide film. (personal opinion)
Anyway, I think that it is a good camera all in all, spetially dedicated for professionals that are use to the digital processes.
